Quality Education for All

Direct Funding of Students and Teachers in the Classroom

The city increased funding for education by 43% without ensuring the money is spent efficiently and directly on our students. Our devoted teachers should not struggle for classroom supplies, and our children should learn in safe and modern schools. I will work to ensure that funds intended for our children are not wasted outside the classroom on lavish municipal union contracts.

More Charter Schools to Expand Parental CHOICE in Education

Independent public schools have proven to be the most effective tool to improve education, especially in poor neighborhoods. They increase parental involvement and student standards, and they cost less than traditional public schools. The cap limiting the number of Charter Schools must be eliminated so that every neighborhood can benefit from the benefits derived by giving parents more control over their children’s education.

Mayoral Control of Our Schools

Having one person responsible for educating our children who is answerable to the voters is a reform that was long overdue. While perhaps not perfect, mayoral control is a vast improvement to the old system where a tin-eared Board of Education ran things without regard for the parents and seemingly for the children as well. Mayoral control has established a trend of accountability that I will work to protect.
